There has been a lot of discussion about cloud computing, and considerable marketing to suggest that it is the next best thing since sliced bread. As might be expected, most of the favourable comments are being produced by those who want to sell cloud computing.

The answer to how suitable cloud computing is for any one business lies, as usual, in the details of the business. The most important consideration is the quality of the internet connection at the company site(s). Smaller companies tend rely on ADSL broadband, which is comparatively cheap, and quite effective for browsing and email. The bandwidth needed for acceptable response times using cloud computing is significantly higher, so what works for browsing and email, might fall well short of what is needed for cloud computing.
